Universities in India can be established in multiple ways: through Central Act, Provincial Act, or State Act. All Universities in India must be recognized and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC is a statutory body set up by the Indian Union government in accordance with the UGC Act 1956 under Ministry of Human Resource Development and is charged with coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education.The Central Government provides grants to the UGC. The Central Government is also responsible for declaring an educational institution as "Deemed-to-be University" on the recommendations of the UGC. SRM University Sikkim came to be in Oct of 2013 with the passage of The Shri Ramasamy Memorial University, Sikkim Act 2013. The Act was passed in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on the 9th Oct 2013.

Scholarship Details
School Topper with 100% tuition fee waiver and School Second Topper with 50% tuition fee waiver are eligible for this scholarship.Students nominated by HRDD, Government of Sikkim are eligible for 25% of waiver in tuition fees. Students bearing COI and admitting directly to the University are eligible for 10% of waiver in the tuition fees.The ward of the employee taking admission in the University is eligible for 50% of waiver in tuition fees.

SRMUS was established through the Shri Ramasamy Memorial University, Sikkim Act, 2013 (Act No.13 of 2013) passed by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly in October 2013. It offers various UG and PG programmes in the field of Arts, Management, Science, Commerce and IT such as BTech, BCA, BSc, BA, BVoc, MA, MSc, MCA, MCom, and MBA. SRM University Sikkim also offers diploma, advanced diploma and vocational degrees in the field of Software Development and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing. In 2020, the University also introduced the BTech programme in three specialisations.
SRM University Sikkim collaborates with other branches of SRM University to exchange knowledge and widen the professional exposure of students. The institute regularly conducts a campus exchange program with SRMIST Chennai.
